I really recomend this book to the people who likes real life cases, because I think that this type of cases happen a lot. Also I recomend to all girls who likes love stories. It is a very good book, it's not long, it's easy to understand, once you start reading you don't want to stop because if you read first the book and then you see the movie it's more exciting, because the way you imagine the characters, setting, scenes etc, doesn't compare to what really happens in the movie, for example I read first the book because the movie was not yet in the cinema, but when I finish the book I want to se the movie. I have read this book two times, the first that I read was after the movie came out, and the second was for this project, I never get tired of read this book, is so romantic and a very good book. I ashamed to say but I really don't like to read a lot, I like short and brief books, because when a book is long and understandable I get stressed. For me this book have been one of my favorites. If I could change something, I would change the death of Augustus and I will wish to end happily, because I really don't like the sad ends.
If this situation happens to me, the fact that I have cancer and the fact that I live under a depression, I really don't know how I will react, because in some way I am a very sensible person, I don't like to sufer, I am a very friendly person who likes to hangout with my friends and be happy all the time, but one thing I never will give up and I will fight for me. Hazel Grace is a teenager who lives under depression, sometimes she think it is not worth living because her cancer problem, so the way she talk and express is not convinced, she is a very sarcastic person, she uses a lot of personification and metaphors. She is the narrator in the book and the protagonist in the movie so there are a lot of types of figurative language, because most of the time she is talking. I will put some examples that she uses "I remember once early on when I couldn't get my breath and it felt like my chest was on fire, flames licking the inside of my ribs fighting for a way to burn out of my body, my parents took me to the ER." - Personification "...I'm on a roller coaster that only goes up, kid." - Metaphor "My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations." - Metaphor "You'll live forever in our hearts, big man." - hyperbole Seventeen-year old Hazel Grace Lancaster attends a cancer patients' support group. Because of her cancer, she uses a portable oxygen tank to breathe. In one of the meetings she catches the eye of a teenage boy, and through the course of the meeting she learns the boy’s name is Augustus Waters. He's there to support their mutual friend, Isaac. Isaac had a tumor in one eye that he had removed, and now he has to have his other eye taken out as well. After the meeting ends, Augustus approaches Hazel and tells her she looks like Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta. He invites Hazel to his house to watch the movie, and while hanging out, the two discuss their experiences with cancer. Hazel reveals she has thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. Augustus had osteosarcoma, but he is now cancer free after having his leg amputated. Before Augustus takes Hazel home, they agree to read one another’s favorite novels. Augustus gives Hazel The Price of Dawn, and Hazel recommends An Imperial affliction. Some of the events are connected in the way that most of the characters have the same experience, so all is related, it talks about the same things, but in different persons and manners, so there is conection between characters. The conflicts are the results of their problems, many of the teenagers who have some type of illness, diary are dealing with different kind of problems. The title is inspired from Act 1, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, in which the noble man play Cassius says to Brutus: "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings."
But if i could put my own meaning that relates the title with the book or the movie, I will think that both, Hazel and Augustus live under the same sitution literally in the same star, also because in my opinion the stars are the most incredible thing where is god and our angels, everyone can thing different things about the title, the importance is that you find your own meaning Since the first page of the book where Hazel Grace Lancaster introduces herself, you realize that the narrator is she, because she starts talking about how she start her illness, how she feel, talk a little bit of how she and her family lives, she also tells how she fall in love with Augustus Waters.
I really like the way she told her story,I would not change it, because if the narrator had been another person, maybe you could not understand or feel how Hazel tells, the way Hazel tells you her story makes you think how difficult is a situation like her, and also the way she explains make it more interesting and exciting. Hazel lives in a modern american suburban town, her house is a very simple house, very comfortable, where she spend most of the time, reading or listening music, in the outside is a very green place, there are people walking with their dogs, its a very calm place. Augustus lives in a very similar place as Hazel, he has his room in the basement, it is a confortable place, where he and his friend Isaac play videogames, and talk about life. Amsterdam, is a place in Holand, where both of them went to meet the writer Peter Van Houten, they visit Ana Frank's House, that now a days is a museum, there they kissed for the first time The setting is very important because its's where all a happen, if you see the movie you can notice that every single place where this two cancer person pass time together, are beautiful places, most of them are outdoors, beautiful views, it seems that always the climate is perfect, and I think that this affect to the characters Hazel Grace Lancaster - The novel’s narrator and 16-year-old protagonist. An astute and remarkably conscientious girl, Hazel was diagnosed when she has 13 years old, doctors told her that she has thyroid cancer that has since spread to her lungs. She keeps most people at a distance, knowing her death will ultimately hurt them, until she falls in love with Augustus. I consider that she is the most strongest character in the novel, because eventhough the fact that almost all her life she has lived with cancer, she tried and she put effort to go on. When she meets Augustus her life completely change, she was more sweet with her parents, she always was smiling and laughing, she seemed to be very happy, of course for every action she has a very different reaction, for example when Augustus and she were in Amsterdam, and Augustus told her the truth about his illnes that he probably is going to die soon, she quickly start to enter in a kind of depression, she changes her mood very constantly depend of the situation. Augustus Waters- The sixteen-year-old with osteosarcoma who becomes Hazel's boyfriend. Augustus has a keen wit and a tendency toward performance he revels in grand romantic gestures. Augustus almost immediately falls in love with Hazel after meeting her at Support Group. Augustus is a simple person that his mission is to enjoy the life, because he never know when he is going to die, so the time that he spend with Hazel converts he in a different person, because he learned so much things from Hazel, he has the support of Hazel all the time, they understand each other, but when something happen imediatly all that happiness changes for other feelings. Isaac - The mutual friend of Hazel's and Augustus's who facilitates their introduction at Support Group. Isaac is cynical by nature. Blinded by cancer and kicked to the curb by his girlfriend Monica, Isaac often embodies skepticism and rage. It is worth noting that he shares his name with Biblical Isaac, who also was blind. Mrs. Lancaster - Hazel’s mother. She is a strong and kind woman who has made it her life to care for Hazel. During the the movie and the book Hazel obsesses over the emotional devastation that her death will cause to her mother. In the end Hazel noticed that her mother has secretly been taking classes to become a social worker. Mr. Lancaster - Hazel’s father. He is caring and prone to tears. In contrast with Hazel's mother, he only understands Hazel's cancer broadly and spends much of his time at work. Peter Van Houten - Hazel and Augustus learn he is a verbose and brash drunkard who pretentiously deflects emotion with walls of intellectualism and cruelty. At the end he realizes that he treated very bad Hazel and Agustus, but he tried to repair the damage that he do to Hazel, Augustus writes a letter and he send it to Peter, and then Peter after the funeral of Augustus he tried to give it to Hazel, but she was very mad at him so she didn't want to talk with him. Patrick - The leader and sole adult at Support Group. He is noted for his warmth and unequivocal optimism. As a consequence of cancer Patrick lost both of his testicles, which provides some of the more cynical group members with a bit of comic relief. I think that he is the roll model for some of the teenagers who assist to the support group, because even though he also lived with a similar experience, he is a happy person and he tried to be positive and show others that they can go on, no matter the situation. |
